Pre-Kindergarten is back at ASA!

August 21, 2019

We’ve had a wonderful first week of school here at ASA. The academic year has begun with motivation, enthusiasm, and big smiles. Across the school, students are settling into their new grade levels and classes, developing new friendships and adapting to new teachers and routines. It’s great to see everyone rising to expectations, even our youngest students in our re-opened PreK!

Meet our new PreK teacher

My name is Jenny Curiano and I am the new PreK teacher. I am originally from the Philippines and I have worked in various international schools around South East Asia and recently in Saudi Arabia. Throughout my teaching career, I have implemented the IB PYP principles and Reggio Emilia philosophy in an inquiry-based setting. I am excited to carry out the same principles and philosophy in our PreK programme at ASA.

So what is happening in the PreK classroom?

We are using the PYP Transdisciplinary themes as a framework for our inquiries in a play-based setting:

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

We acknowledge that the role of the learning environment is vital in shaping and nurturing children’s learning. The layout and the materials are carefully crafted to support children’s cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and language skills development. Our role as teachers in the classroom is to facilitate inquiries, extend and challenge children’s thinking, model the attributes of a learner, and to co-construct ideas with them.

I am looking forward to collaborating with the whole community to support and extend the learning of the youngest ones in our school.
