Dr. Caroline Brokvam
Director

Before taking on the role of Director at ASA in 2016, Dr. Caroline Brokvam served as High School Principal and Head of City Campus at Copenhagen International School (CIS). Caroline began her international teaching career as an English teacher at the International School of Stavanger in Norway, and went on to hold school leadership positions in the Philippines and Australia as well as Denmark. She holds a Graduate Diploma in Education from Charles Sturt University, a Certificate of International School Leadership from the Principal’s Training Centre, a first class joint honours BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Western Australia, and a Ph.D in English Literature also from UWA. Caroline is joined at ASA by her Norwegian husband Ståle, who is the Director of Technology, and their daughter who is in grade 5. They also have two sons, both graduates of CIS, studying at universities in Australia.

Steve Vis
Elementary Principal

Steve is in his fifth year at ASA, his second year as a Principal at the school, and his third as ASA’s Primary Years Programme Coordinator. Before moving into an administrative role, Steve spent 14 years as an educator in international schools in Ecuador, Thailand, Mexico, Bolivia, Guatemala, and then ASA in Madagascar. Steve holds a bachelor of arts degree in Elementary Education from Calvin College and a master’s degree in international education from Framingham State University, as well as a Certificate of International School Leadership from the Principals’ Training Center. Steve is joined at ASA by his wife Katie, who is a fifth grade teacher. Their daughter, born this past year, will be old enough to join ASA in a couple of years.

Richard Reilly
Secondary Principal

Before becoming Secondary Principal/DP Coordinator, Richard was High School Assistant Principal and IB Diploma Program Coordinator at Hong Kong Academy. Prior to this he was the IB CAS and Service Coordinator at the school. Richard is an experienced General Science and Physics teacher, who has also taught in his native Scotland, and at International School Manila in the Philippines. Richard has a BSc in Physics and Mathematics and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Strathclyde University, a Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management from Napier University, a Certificate of International Leadership from the Principals’ Training Centre and an M.Ed (Leadership and Management) from the Open University (UK). He has particular interests in the areas of student leadership, global issues and service learning. Before going into teaching Richard worked as a Counter Terrorism Analyst and Political Attaché for the British Government.
