Working at ASA
The American School of Antananarivo (ASA) is a not for profit school. Grounded in U.S. Common Core standards, thoughtfully designed through the IB frameworks, and enriched by our Malagasy context, learning at ASA is both globally minded and locally connected. Our largest nationalities are Malagasy, French and American, and our student body of 195 represents 25+ nationalities. An International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, we have offered the PYP since 2012, the DP since 2018, and the MYP since 2024. At ASA, our school culture is grounded in the Malagasy value of “Fihavanana”, which embodies connection, mutual support, and community well-being. We are a small, caring school where students are known, supported, and challenged to become their best selves. Our faculty and families foster a culture of trust, inclusivity, and collaboration, nurturing inquiry, integrity, and innovation in every classroom.
ASA teachers enjoy a low cost of living, comfortable housing, a modern campus, and ample opportunity to explore Madagascar’s extraordinary biodiversity and diverse landscapes—from lush rainforests and coral-fringed coasts to the island’s unique wildlife and vibrant local culture.
Antananarivo is widely regarded as a desirable family post by expatriates, however Madagascar is also one of the poorest countries in the world, and faced with developing world challenges. Applicants should be ready to embrace both the rewarding Malagasy experiences and the practical realities of living and working in an LEDC country.
ASA is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people. We have a robust Child Protection Policy in place. All applicants will be subject to identity checks, qualification checks and employment checks, which will include an exploration of any gaps within employment. Police clearances are required, referees will be contacted and previous employers will specifically be asked questions regarding the applicant’s suitability to work with children.
